Instagram is making a big change to how the grid will work and look. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the app, it’s like CDs in the 1980s. Something that has taken the world by storm. And for some time, it’s been difficult to control the feed (if you are not a social media manager). The experts started planning content out in advance, a few years ago, just trying to get some order.
Now there is some talk about it all changing. Is this true? Did Instagram have an update? Will everyone finally be able to create their desired look, or is this more hopeful thinking?
Here’s the truth about the update to the Instagram grid…
How Instagram Works
This platform has almost 4 billion downloads and was considered the second most downloaded app in 2024 [thesocialshepherd.com]. It allows users to post content (photos and videos), create stories, engage, direct message, create collaborative posts, and use broadcast channels. So why is it so popular? This varies from user to user, but ever since the word “influencer” became a job and people could make money from this app, the numbers started climbing [sproutsocial.com]. A mom of 2 could get more from one post than working an entire month (some a full year). They can earn anywhere from a few dollars to more than $100,000 per post. Yes, that’s not a typo.
This, however, is not the only way to make money through the platform. Brand collaborations and e-commerce have also proven to be lucrative sources of revenue, often considered full-time jobs. Content is not all just fun and games. It takes a lot of dedication, brainstorming, planning, admin, and, of course, time. Please note that if you’re Kim Kardashian, this does not apply. One sponsored post can make her millions of dollars [businessinsider.com]. A sum that makes you think long and hard about the type of life you are living, but that’s just the effect the Kardashians have.
The Instagram photo grid is currently arranged in reverse chronological order. This can be a pain for businesses, influencers, or just personal profiles to display the content that they want people to see first. Right now, there is a pinning feature (released in June 2022), but you can only pin 3 posts at a time, which does not really give you control over your feed [plannthat.com].
You might be wondering… did Instagram change today? You’re not alone. Instagram looks different lately, and the changes are real. One of the most noticeable tweaks in the newest update for Instagram is how image sizing affects the grid [obrienmedia.co.uk].
Instead of the traditional square format, new posts now appear in a 4:5 aspect ratio. This vertical sizing impacts how your content looks on your Instagram photo grid, making older square images feel slightly out of place.
Some individuals have not yet seen this change [reddit.com]. If you are one of them, make sure that your app is updated to the latest version. It’s rolling out in phases, so even if it hasn’t reached your device yet, it likely will soon.
Not only does the Instagram grid get an update… But stories are getting a refresh, too (or already did). The update includes several subtle but impactful features designed to enhance how users engage with short-form content [blog.hootsuite.com].
So, what does this new Instagram story update offer? A cleaner interface with updated font styles and better alignment tools, making it easier to create visually appealing content on the fly. Some users have also noticed quicker load times and smoother transitions between stories, which helps improve the overall viewing experience [creators.instagram.com].
While these updates may seem small, they reflect Instagram’s continued push to compete with platforms like TikTok by improving every piece of the user journey, not just the main feed.
The answer is yes [socialmediatoday.com]. “Instagram allows what now?” That’s the response most people have when hearing about the Instagram grid change. It’s no longer just a dream. It’s finally becoming a reality. According to Instagram’s co-founder, the platform has been working on giving users more control over how their profiles appear, starting with updates to the grid layout [socialmediatoday.com]. This new IG feature has no confirmed release date yet, but it is currently being tested internally.
Is the Instagram grid really changing in 2025?
Yes, Instagram is testing changes to allow more control over grid layout and post order, including expanded formatting options like 4:5 post sizes.
What is the new aspect ratio for Instagram posts?
Instagram now favors a 4:5 vertical aspect ratio for feed posts, which takes up more screen space and improves engagement.
Can you rearrange your Instagram grid manually?
Not officially yet. Instagram is testing this feature internally, and some users may see early access during phased rollouts.
How do I know if I have the latest Instagram update?
Check your app store for updates and compare your app interface with official Instagram release notes or social media blogs.
Why does my Instagram layout look different from others?
Instagram rolls out new features in phases. Not all users receive updates at the same time, especially design/UI changes.
What does 4:5 mean for my photo content?
4:5 is a vertical rectangle that fills more of the screen than a square (1:1), which helps your content stand out in crowded feeds.
Are Instagram stories also getting updated?
Yes, Instagram has improved stories with faster load times, new text styles, and better design tools for creators and brands.
How can marketers use these changes to their advantage?
By designing for 4:5 vertical space, pinning key posts, and adapting to visibility shifts, marketers can increase engagement and reach.
